Most Popular NBA Teams on Reddit

Using reddit's API I collected the subscriber count for each NBA team. I wanted to create a graphic that could be used as a way to estimate the relative size of each franchise's fanbase. I used D3.js to build the graphic shown below! Data last updated January 31st, 2024.

Much to my dismay, my favorite team in the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers have the smallest number of subscribers, 74,523, much lower than the second-last-rated Orlando Magic. This is surprising, given how Cleveland went to the finals 4 years in a row not too long ago and has one of the most promising young cores. They added all-star Donovan Mitchell to a roster of young talented players and are on track to make the playoffs in a loaded Eastern Conference. The Golden State Warriors have a huge fanbase, however, the reason they have so many more subscribers compared to the rest of the NBA is due to bots making it an outlier.
